Community Building at St Peter's College
We had planned for our Grade 10s to organize and host a mini Olympics for the students of Gideon Rambwani. However, this was not to be due to the lockdown regulations. The Food Parcel Drive was initiated not only to substitute the planned outreach programmed but more importantly to assist the community of Gideon Rambuwani Primary school during these challenging times. The livelihoods of the families of Gideon Rambuwani have been dominated by the challenges of poverty and unemployment. The ramifications of the National Lockdown has further exacerbated these challenges.
The St Peter’s College community’s response has been overwhelming. Social responsibility and outreach form an important part of the holistic programme at St Peter’s College, our outreach programme has proven to help boost self-confidence in our students, getting them out of their comfort zone and dealing with real-world problems. It also has brought a certain perspective into view that they may not have been aware of.
The St Peter’s College Community has managed to contribute over 500 Food Parcels, 400 masks and 73 bottles of sanitizer. The food parcels consisted of 2.5 Kg Maize Meal, 1 Kg Samp, 2 Kg Sugar, 4 x Baked Beans, 4 x Tin Fish, 2l Cooking Oil, 1 x Peanut Butter, 1 x Jam, 200g Teabags. The Food Parcels are delivered by members of St Peter’s College staff to Gideon Rambuwani every weekend.
The Principal of Gideon Rambuwani Primary School, Mrs Semenya, and her members of staff are making a huge impact in the lives of the Gideon Rambuwani families. They have run an extremely needed outreach reach programme and always exercise good governance and have shown great appreciation for the relationship that exists with St Peter’s College.
I would like to thank all the members of our community who have contributed towards the Gideon Rambuwani food parcel outreach programme. Food Parcel Drive has been truly humbling and rewarding. I am so proud of the St Peter’s College Community for living by our core values and joining forces with Gideon Rambuwani Primary School with a common goal of making a difference during these challenging times.
