Cultural Collective Term One 2023
St Peter’s College has had a busy cultural term filled with new experiences as well as favourites from previous years. The spectre of COVID has left and in its place, the vibrancy and energy of the creative and performing arts have taken a firm hold.
A few highlights of the term are:
- The weekend-long Music Bootcamp for all our ensembles was used to study repertoire.
- The SPC Radio Station has already had their first few broadcasts.
- St Peter’s College competed in the Dance Sport Schools’ League (DSSL) and hosted the inter-schools championships. Several of our students were selected to attend provincial trials.
- Our public speaking teams hosted a few evenings and coped well with the rigours of the speech and drama guild’s league.
- The Music Department brought a wonderful Evening of Voice to the stage mid-February.
- A few days later our musos visited Trinity House Randpark Ridge for our first-ever collaborative workshops.
- Our other “mouth warriors”, the debating teams, all progressed to the second round of SACCEE competitions.
- Our Hindu Students’ Association had their first festive occasion to celebrate Shivarathri.
- The Cultural Bonanza (an eight-hour festival of all forms of art) with Benoni High School was a new event that raised both the bar and the roof! Thanks, Marimba and Steelpan Ensembles!
- The second soiree (summer) was held early in March and Trinity House made a reciprocal visit with their ensembles. Many of the students also attended the “We Will Rock You” show at Monte Casino.
- Prof Peter Glendinning, a visiting academic from the USA, did a guest lecture to our Photography Club.
- Several drama evenings were held inter alia a celebration of South African theatre as well as a very emotive poetry evening.
Besides these special events, the Cultural Co-Curricular programme continued with its weekly rehearsals and meetings. Eco-Pets, Choir, Beauty and the Beast, Macbeth, St Petrian journalism and contemporary dance have been actively supported.
On 6 April, 61 students will leave for a three-week trip on the Italian Cultural Exchange visiting sites such as Rome, Venice, Ascoli Piceno, Pisa, Sorrento and many more.
We also look forward to the special Jubilee events coming soon in the second term.
