Sportsmanship’s 10 Commandments
The sports field is an extension of the classroom in that, as educators, our job is not to produce Springbok rugby players, but to prepare our pupils for the challenges that lie ahead in a rapidly changing global environment. The sports field is merely one facet of that education process.
That is why we at St Peter’s College define winning as doing your personal best and living up to the high standard of sportsmanship established by your coach.
It is important that, as teachers and coaches, we instil in every pupil these values and the correct sport etiquette.
Every time we compete we always go out to win, even though that is not always possible. More importantly, the question we ask ourselves is: Did we perform to our full potential?
Our philosophy is that the education of children, and not producing Springboks, is priority.
Sportsmanship’s 10 Commandments:
- The golden rule is to do unto others as you would have others do unto you
- Enjoy yourself and promote enjoyment for others
- Be responsible for your actions
- Have an open mind about others’ weaknesses and have a forgiving attitude
- Have pride in one’s performance and one’s school
- Be a friend, not an enemy, and create a positive environment
- Encourage others to do or be their best
- Sportsmanship should be contagious
- Remember it is a privilege to participate
- Practice sportsmanship in all situations at all costs
Sportsmanship takes teamwork!
