Academics

During these foundation years the main academic emphasis is on the acquisition of Reading, Writing and Mathematical skills. The development of verbal skills, listening skills, reasoning skills and memory play a vital role in the mastering of these skills.

Much of the teaching is done through rich learning experiences that encourage a deeper understanding of the pupils’ own experiences and environment, whilst simultaneously making learning Literacy, Mathematics and Life Skills relevant and fun. St Peter’s strives for academic excellence and pupils are encouraged to achieve their potential in all areas of the academic curriculum.

Problem-solving skills

Identify and solve problems and make responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking.

Teamwork

Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community.

Self-responsibility skills

Organise and manage self and activities responsibly and effectively.

Research skills

Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information.

Communication skills

Communicate effectively using visual, symbolic and/or language skills in various modes.

Technological and environmental literacy

Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and the health of others.

Developing macrovision

Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.

Thinking skills

A wide range of strategies and tools are introduced to the boys as part of the Thinking Skills programme, encouraging higher-order thinking. These skills, especially the Thinking Maps and Thinking Hats, are infused across the curriculum and in all subjects.
