Social and Emotional
At St Peter’s the social and emotional development of each pupil in the Junior Prep is of fundamental importance. This encompasses the pupils’ attitudes toward themselves, their home life, their school, teachers, classmates and their learning.
The culture and background of each pupil is accepted and made relevant to their school environment.
At St Peter’s the aim is to provide a safe, pleasant and stimulating environment in which each pupil feels secure, confident and ready to learn.
Good manners and a caring, empathetic attitude are expected. A positive self-image, co-operation, open-mindedness and initiative are encouraged.
Pupils are urged to participate actively in their own learning; independence, resilience and self-reliance are promoted.
The Responsive Classroom approach is used to develop a sense of community within the phase. Every child describes their hopes and dreams for the year as part of a goal setting process. Classroom rules are drawn up by all members of the class and relevant consequences are discussed by the pupils. A morning meeting is held at the start of each day to offer the children a chance to express themselves and openly discuss experiences with their peers.
