Co-curricular
The co-curricular programme at St Peter’s College is one of its greatest strengths, spanning more than 30 activities across sport and culture. We are proud to celebrate the many successes our students achieve both on and off the field.
It is compulsory for Grade 8 and 9 students to participate in a sport and a cultural activity each term. Grade 10 to 12 students are required to participate in either a sport or a cultural activity each term.
Some highlights of our co-curricular offering include:
- International rugby teams, including the Springboks, regularly train at St Peter’s College and have been most complimentary about the quality of our fields and facilities. A number of international soccer teams also use our fields to train.
- Our hockey astroturf was inaugurated with an opening tournament in May 2016 and remains one of the finest facilities of its kind.
- The Annual Old Petrians’ Tournament – the largest and most prestigious open girls’ water polo tournament in South Africa – takes place in February, with approximately 28 participating schools from across South Africa and Zimbabwe.
- Our popular Annual Sports and Cultural Festival takes place in September each year, with more than 45 schools and 3 500 participants enjoying a wide range of sport and cultural activities.
- The Music, Art, Drama and Dance (MADD) Centre opened in January 2015, adding a wonderful new dimension to our Creative Arts Department.
- Our Indoor Sports Centre, completed and officially opened in early 2023, is equipped with high-quality audio-visual equipment that enhances the atmosphere throughout the entire facility.
Our busiest students are our most successful students. We know that some of life’s most important lessons are not learned in the classroom – everyone needs to learn the importance of winning and losing with equal grace and dignity. Exposure to competitive activity, whether on the playing fields or across a chessboard, helps hone our interpersonal skills.
It is the policy of St Peter’s College to expose all students to a wide range of sporting activities and options. This is achieved through an afternoon sports and cultural programme that offers a variety of activities on a cyclical basis throughout the year. Participation in these activities as well as Inter-House competitions is compulsory for all students.

‘Old Pets’ Tournament
Our annual ‘Old Pets’ tournament has been running for more than a decade and is the largest and most prestigious girls’ water polo tournament in the country. The tournament also features the cricket and basketball excellence that participating schools have to offer. Our highly anticipated Sport and Cultural Festival garners attention throughout South Africa and even surrounding countries.
Each year, more than 3 500 participants from approximately 45 schools, their parents and supporters enjoy this celebration of sport and culture.
Service Clubs
The Cultural Department regularly showcases our talented students through the beautiful Music, Art, Drama and Dance (MADD) Centre. Throughout the year, students perform at music soirees, instrumental recitals, art exhibitions, drama shows and dance competitions.

St Peter’s College has five houses:
Bishop
Lourie
Oriole
Sunbird
Kingfisher
The Houses were named after birds that were resident in the area when the College was built. Every student is allocated to one of the five Houses, which form the basis for intra-College competition. The different Houses compete on the sports field, culturally and academically.
The sought-after prize is that Sir Peter Rabbit – a giant fluffy rabbit that is also the College mascot – wears the winning House’s colours for the following year. The Housemaster and House Captains manage each House.
