Governance

The St Peter’s Council operates as a non-executive Board of Directors in support of the Rector (the CEO), the Heads and their executive teams, who are responsible and accountable for the day-to-day running of the School. The School Constitution requires that the Council control the finances and set the general policy. The Council comprises the Visitor (the Bishop of Johannesburg), the Rector, the Heads and between 9 and 12 elected members. Additional members may be co-opted to fulfil specific functions.

As the Council must represent the parent body, its membership reflects an appropriate balance between parents and non-parents, across gender and race. Most Council members are active within the business community, and their contribution is therefore focused on guidance and strategic direction. The School’s executive team values the Council’s expertise across disciplines such as finance, law, real estate, security, marketing, human resources and public relations – and sub-committees have been formed to support this sharing of expertise across each area.

The Council meets formally twice per school term, with additional meetings arranged as needed. Direct communication with the Council is important so that members remain aware of the views of the parent body.

Parents seeking action on a specific issue should direct their communication – depending on the nature of the matter – to the class teacher, the Housemaster or Housemistress, a member of the School’s executive, the Financial Manager or the Head.

Membership of the Council, whether as a full or co-opted member, is by invitation or in response to an advertisement in The Keyhole (school newsletter), subject to approval from the Bishop and an interview process. A minimum commitment of two years is expected.

Parents Association

The St Peter’s Prep Schools Parents Association (PA) comprises the entire parent body of the Boys Prep School, the Girls Prep School and the Pre-Prep School. It is represented by a committee of volunteer parents elected annually. The aim of the PA Committee is to build our parent community and provide positive support to the School. The PA has two representatives, who have voting rights, on the School Council.

Throughout the year, event sub-committees of the PA organise a range of ‘fun’draising social events, including:

  • The unique Staff Variety Show, which showcases the talents of our incredible staff and has been part of the St Peter’s story since the 70’s.
  • Ladies Lunch – a social lunch gathering for the ladies in our community
  • The St Peter’s Family Fun Day – a fabulous day of live music and inflatables for kids
  • Golf & Padel Day

 

Other PA fundraising initiatives include:

  • The School Shop (Keys Clothing) and the Second-Hand Shop (Keys Cupboard)
  • MyDifference programme
  • The weekly St Peter’s Classifieds advertising email
  • Hotdog days
  • Leaver’s plaques

Each phase of the School has its own Communications Committee (CC), whose main role is to manage the class representatives (class reps). Class reps play a vital role in building our community – liaising between parents and teachers, arranging social gatherings and supporting the recruitment of volunteers for School and PA events.

The PA funds go towards initiatives that improve the parent experience on campus. The PA also sponsors sports teas and refreshments for players at all inter-house and inter-school fixtures hosted at the School, as well as catering for most parent functions.

In building our community, the St Peter’s Prep Schools PA collaborates with the Inclusion Committee to:

  • Ensure broader involvement of all St Peter’s parents in PA roles
  • Encourage all St Peter’s parents to participate in School activities
  • Ensure that all PA events cater for the entire St Peter’s Prep community

We encourage and invite all parents to volunteer and become active participants in the numerous portfolios, events and initiatives at St Peter’s Prep Schools. PA Committee members are elected at the PA AGM, held traditionally in the first term.
